The approaching Comet Elenin has triggered suspicious and fearful speculation among some observers. A contribution to this brouhaha has been the lack of images of this visitor from deep space, but at last there are images from a NASA space observatory of this oncoming comet.

On 1 August 2011 Comet Elenin (C/2010 X1) passed within just 7 million km of the STEREO-B solar observatory spacecraft. Taking advantage of this happy coincidence, the spacecraft was physically rolled to allow it to spend an hour capturing images of the little comet and its coma with its wide angle HI-2 instrument.

This is a similar diagram showing the orbit and position of the comet for the same date. (Image credit: NASA)

The STEREO spacecraft will make hour-long observations every day for the next week or longer until the comet enters its normal field of view. Then the comet can be continuously observed into September with other instruments, such as the SOHO C3 coronagraph.

Astronomers expect that the comet will become significantly brighter to STEREO-B over the next few days due to an effect called  “forward-scattering” when sunlight is reflected of the dust in the comet’s coma directly towards the spacecraft . This is purely an observational artefact of STEREO-B’s position with respect to the Sun and comet and does not mean anything significant is happening to the comet itself.

Elenin comes into view. (Image credit: NASA)

The first images show Elenin to look just as you would expect a small comet to look. No tail is visible yet. It is clearly not a planet-sized body, or a brown dwarf or a red dwarf. It is exactly where it was expected to be. Hopefully this will reassure the worried that this is just another comet (like the much more interesting Comet Garradd (visible with binoculars near Pegasus).

There are now videos assembled from STEREO-B images. The first shows the comet moving across the field of view between 1 and 5 August 2011. The animation “jumps” a couple of times when the image was lost as the spacecraft rolled back to its usual orientatation.

This false colour movie is the observation from 3 August, the comet is the little moving fuzzball about a quarter of the way across from the left. Note the constellation of Orion.

The next animation was made on 6 August and it appears that the comet’s tail is developing (see image above link).

Latest news (31 August):

image of elenin in decline

False colour images from the STEREO- spacecraft show the comet's decline (Image credit:US Navy)

Comet Elenin had already been dimming, but there was worse to come, recent images show Comet Elenin is starting to become elongated, appearing as a bright smear against the blackness of space. It seems that the comet’s nucleus is breaking up. The Mayans and Hopi Elders didn’t see that coming! (Nor too, did the Electric Universe theory.)

If you are new to studying comets, this may sound dramatic but is a fairly common event (you can read about another current example at the Faulkes Telescope site).

Since the 1950s, the nucleus of a comet has been thought of as a “dirty snowball” of mainly ice with some rocky material.  Recent visitations by spacecraft to some comets have suggested that some (possibly older) comets are more rock than ice. However younger comets like Comet Elenin still seem to be loose mash-ups of dust and ice, probably very loosely bound together and rather fragile.  As the comet nears the Sun, solar heating drives ice to melt into vapour and escape into space, effectively removing the cement that holds the comet together. The nucleus breaks up into a series of chunks or disintegrates entirely into a blizzard of small fragments.

This development makes Elenin possibly more interesting still to astronomers for it what it could show them about the make-up of comets. Hopefully, it also marks the beginning of the disintegration of the weird doomsday cult that has grown up around this minor comet

I will continue to add new and better images to this post as I receive them. From the full background on this story, please see 10 Facts You Need to Know about Comet Elenin.

If Elenin is not considered a threat,Why do people name it wormwood.Do they add on names from Biblical verses to make it more dramatic..I do believe in God and I do believe things are going to occur..But no one knows when these things are to happen…

Hi Admin,

are there any up to date images of YU55 available?

It would be good to get a good look at something this close – thanks and keep up the good work

This has been the most interesting site I have seen in a long time, thanks so much Admin! I was trying to find info on ‘Carl Sagan’s reply’ in 2001/2002 and ended up here after watching a scary elenin “protect yourself” video. You have made me feel quite relieved. Many thanks for your study 🙂

Goalfer · September 26, 2011 at 21:26

I spent years as a young child believing a nostadarmas (spelling wrong)prediction that the world would end in the early 90’s, truthfully anyone who puts the scare story’s on the net needs help big time, this stuff really can have a big affect on people, well done admin for fighting back.

D3MON · September 24, 2011 at 17:12

I have read many posts as to the orbital path of Elenin and also watched it through the telescope and its not got anything to do with religion or faith, god was created by man as a form of control and explain what couldnt be explained . Elenin is a simple body of mass spinning in space left over debris from past times , enjoy the amazing spectacle and wait for the tail it will form once it heats up and starts breaking up with the heat from our sun. And ask for it hitting us i got more chance throwing a double decker bus 100m.

Well maybe your Demon father can explain it better to you..As far as your comment about my Father, you dont have any proof that he doesnt exist,,and we still love you anyway regardless of the fact that you are clueless..

lol sorry admin just read your comment from a while back, your very clued up on it all! haha 😉

gaztoonice · September 21, 2011 at 13:55

also apparently they say about our world and all the other planets in our solar system, apparently theres another solar system forming outside ours! lol with its own sun and everything! which apparently is flinging comets towards us and also would obviously heat up our solar system. lol and another theory is that the two solar systems might be gradually coming together, which would cause mayhem! like i said im not convinced but still a very interesting read! probably a load of rubbish, but always better to be aware than not no at all!

gaztoonice · September 21, 2011 at 13:47

to be honest i dont no a lot about astronomy, but since hearing about this comet from a friend, him saying that apparently it was going to doom us all, ive looked into it, hours of research, and ive come to the conclusion that if the world will end in 2012 and all of what the doomsdayers predict about this comet, then its all mostly to do with the planetary allignment, which if thats the case we apparently have another allignment somewhen between 24-28th sept, few days away! which if any of this is true, then there is going to be another disaster between those dates. In my opinion, if it doesnt happen then all of its rubbish, and nothing is going to happen at all. But no matter what, this has all been very entertaining! and if it is going to happen…… then i think we should all have a massive end of the world party!

Billy · September 19, 2011 at 11:12

When is the comet passing

    admin · September 21, 2011 at 13:33

Hi Billy, if you want to try to see it from the UK, your best bets are from about 5 October onwards. Look east in the pre-dawn sky. You will need good binoculars on a tripod or better still a telescope and detailed charts. See Comet Chasing and Comet Charts. It’s going to be extremely faint, so good luck!

Dan · September 16, 2011 at 15:35

Interesting reading these comments; go admin, great work!

The main thing that needs to be considered here is why so many people want to believe the doomsday is coming. Is it a dissatisfaction with modern day life? An understanding of their own insignificance and a desire to be a part of something big?

I find it interesting.

Anyway, people believe what they want to believe, a lot of the doomsdayers have already made their minds up and will not hear anything that contradicts that. Simply put, they select the information they choose to believe and not believe until it confirms their suspicions.

To the doomsdayers, don’t waste your time wrapping your head up in all this, if you are right you won’t even get the opportunity to say “I told you so”. Go outside. Enjoy nature. Fraternise with beautiful women instead…

Chrisophski · September 14, 2011 at 12:40

If climate change is personal to our planet alone, i would understand globle warming the way our scientists insist we should, but when you get information from reliable and sound resources indicating that other worlds are also “heating up” then it becomes a cosmic event and not singled out to our own little rock in the sky. As you already know (i’m sure) Mars and pluto are also heating up, how can this be?? the icecaps on mars are receeding so unless these planets (with next to zero atmosphere) are releasing greenhouse gas’s how do you explain this? Looking forward to your reply.

Kind Regards

    admin · September 14, 2011 at 13:13

This is something that keeps coming up. Mars is NOT warming.Pluto does seem to be based on a observation made in 1988 and a second in 2002, but there is a lot of uncertainity about. Earth, however, is warming up and we appear to know why.

ancient symbolism, with the “winged-planet” from several different cultures:

and a utube binary star vid (couldn’t find the one with the diagram of 2 systems – and i know utube isn’t relaible but yeah, i’ve run out of battry!)

i’m not crazy or stupid, just like to research (whether i’m good at it or not, besides the point!)

    Dante · September 13, 2011 at 20:27

I so agree with you, the thing is people know that something is different, that there will be a massive change, yet they keep looking out there. love is all we need!

    admin · September 13, 2011 at 20:41

    i’m not crazy or stupid

I never said that. And thanks for responding, most people don’t bother.

The idea that the Sun has a companion star which periodically sends swarm of comets into the inner Solar System is a real theory and it isn’t impossible but very few scientists take it seriously. There is no really striking evidence to prove it and there isn’t a really pressing reason for it to be true. Here are some links for you which reflect the mainstream view and .

In your second, I’m not a historian but I see problems there. The very first picture caption is wrong; the Egyptian goddess Isis portrayed as a woman with wings is nothing to do with Nibiru. By the way, Nibiru was not a god or person. To the Babylonians Nibiru was the highest point the planets ever reach in the sky (the highest point of the ecliptic, in the modern constellation Libra) . Also, and this shows how differently the Babylonians thought about things from us, they called the planets different names when they were in different parts of the sky. Nibiru was also the name they called Jupiter when it was at the highest point of the ecliptic!

The various winged figures which follow, well there is no evidence that I know of to say these are anything to do with celestial objects. Babylonian astronomical records are clay tablets covered in cuneiform text without illustrations. By the way, the oldest writing is not on a Sumerian clay tablet, see . The Kolbrin Bible is not taken seriously at all by scholars and appears to be a modern document. I really don’t see any substance in this site at all. same goes for the You Tube video.

Honestly, you would be better sticking to mainstream astronomy sites to research comets. Try these for a start and

Chrisnismist · September 13, 2011 at 08:54

This is my understanding of all of this: Comet Elenin was discovered last year and said to be a long period comet, meaning it came from the Oort cloud and is on a very long orbit from there to the sun. If it was discovered only last year, how is is possible to know it’s a long period comet? There have been reports of several other comets/object trailing with Elenin, namely Honda, Yu55, Levy.

The ancients (mayans, hopi, even the zorastrian picture of thiert god has the winged planet) beleived in this comet. Remember that many ancient civilizations disappeared without a trace. So its plausible that they were overcome with evironmental changes brought about by these comets/celestial alignments. Or maybe it passed and those that survived wrote something like “damn, that was close, next time it comes back we won’t be so lucky!” hence the “predictions”.
See it’s come before (as per the ancients writings), and now it has come again. Now i beleive that it probably will miss the earth. But what if it really is a planet that is part of the extra solar system attached to this binary star system? What then? Is the comet coming before the planet as like a warning/scout ship?
I’ve been reading about the 9th Wave and that the end of an age will be at the end of october 2011. There’s a lot of stuff out it space, a lot of thing we dont fully understand, like how come Elenin doesn’t behave exactly like what we’re used to seeing. Even the bible has several references to the second coming of christ, wormwood the destroyer, etc. Dont tell me the bible is wrong and just full of life stories.
I don’t know what to believe anymore, but i feel that it is a time of great change. I beleive in truth, karma, and love.

    admin · September 13, 2011 at 09:42

If it was discovered only last year, how is is possible to know it’s a long period comet?

That’s easy. If you can observe its motion over several nights you can plot its orbit to high precision. You’ll know how long it takes to go around the Sun, how close it will get from and how far it will get from the Sun, The longer you observe it the more accurately the orbit.can be determined (down to the last few decimal places). Astronomers have been doing this for comets from the 1700s at least so it’s not strange new science by any means.

There have been reports of several other comets/object trailing with Elenin, namely Honda, Yu55, Levy

These are other comets and asteroids but they are not in any way associated with Comet Elenin.

The ancients (mayans, hopi, even the zorastrian picture of thiert god has the winged planet) beleived in this comet

No they didn’t. Prove me wrong!

Remember that many ancient civilizations disappeared without a trace.

So how do we know about these nameless civilisations then?

Or maybe it passed and those that survived wrote something like “damn, that was close, next time it comes back we won’t be so lucky!” hence the “predictions”.

No, there’s no evidence than anyone (even the brilliant astronomers of China) knew comets can return before Edmond Halley in 1705 predicted that the comet later named for him would return in 1758 or so.

But what if it really is a planet that is part of the extra solar system attached to this binary star system? What then?

    What binary star system?

Is the comet coming before the planet as like a warning/scout ship?

I’ve been reading about the 9th Wave and that the end of an age will be at the end of october 2011

So what scientific journals did you read this in?

how come Elenin doesn’t behave exactly like what we’re used to seeing

    How is it behaving strangely?

I don’t know what to believe anymore

I think that’s the root of the problem, you want to believe.

In the recent 20 years (since hollywood) we have seen/heard so many of these people (having so much time in their hands) visioning doomsday for every year (1999/2000/2002…and now 2012) if this year passes probably we are going to have 2014 as a new date because of some Mayan calendar difference and then after 2014 they’ll find something else. Get a life and enjoy it. Stop watching so much movies and believe your own press 🙂

counter-info!!! something is going down but what iam not sure yet…. what worrys me is the silence off goverments and preping for something big.
fact is the world is changing in the last few years, more so this year!
and people are looking for answers and none are being given.

a couple of things……..

1. mayan callender ends(last time plants were frozen instantly)

2. a rogue planet is in LOTS of history from LOTS of civilizations

3. please explain why N.A.S.A would say they found a plantery body in the 80″s then say it was a misstake???

4. extreme weather is getting worse as we speak

5. 1 of jupiters rings disappeared in 2010(maybe related)

these are just a few of the things that trouble me…….

iam just looking for the truth!

    Stuart · August 31, 2011 at 11:32

Dear Duane, I’m glad you are looking for the truth. You might start by questioning the assumptions of some of your points and if they have any real evidence.

    1) The Mayan calendar enters a new cycle. Our calendar does this every 31st December. Where is the evidence that plants were instantly frozen? Sometimes plants do get frozen on 31st December but that is usually in the northern hemisphere due to winter.

    2) There may be myths about “rogue” planets but there are also myths about gods eating the Sun every night and people being turned into bears and thrown into the stars. Myths do not need to be based on fact.

    3) Can you provide evidence that NASA made such an announcement in the 80s? I am not aware of that. I am aware that in 1991 a British astronomer announced the discovery of a planet around a pulsar which later turned out to be a mistake. The mistake was that they hadn’t taken into account the ellipticity of the Earth’s orbit in their calculations. When they did, they realised there was no planet after all and announced their mistake. Are you thinking of that example?

    4) If we assume that extreme weather is getting worse, there are far more straightforward reasons e.g. climate change.

    5) I think you may have mistaken a ring for a cloud belt. Things do change in space; it isn’t a fixed painting. You wouldn’t expect clouds to stay fixed on the Earth so why should they stay fixed on Jupiter?

      DUANE · September 1, 2011 at 09:33

Dear Stuart, thank you for replying

i question everything\every point of veiw untill i have the truth.

      1. the mayan calender was based on the stars and heavenly bodys, in fact there civilization was based on this! they have been spot on with there star charts\callenders.
it was on Nat Geo about the frozen “tropical” plants, under the south american glazier which they said was created 5000 ish years ago. about the time the mayan callender reset last time. also the frozen cave man that was found was frozen instantly “about 5000 years ago”

      2. when diffrent civilizations on diffrent sides of the world have the same “myths” about a rogue planet at similar times in history. it is a little worrying. unless they knew each other and forget to let the history books know about it.

      3. 1 year after the IRAS was put into space, a plantery body was found VERY close to us, it was put in an american paper then withdrawn the next day.

      4. extreme weather IS getting worse but according to our scientists climate change wont affect us for years??? plus the weather is getting pretty bad, pretty quick and looks like it is speeding up! to what, i do not know!

      5. sorry 🙁 , i did mean the cloud belt not the ring. when was the last time in history jupiters cloud belt changed? does this happen alot?

i dont beleive most of the crap being put on the internet “people trying to cash in on this”

but i do beleive in my own instincts and researce and what i can see for myself

i have a 3 year old little boy and i pray to god that ill be sat on his 5th birthday laughing at myself for being daft

        Stuart · September 6, 2011 at 09:50

Duane, try not to spend 2011/2012 worrying about Comet Elenin or the rubbish surrounding 2012. Spend the time with your son. After all, he’ll be a moody teenager soon enough so enjoy this age when he is enthusiastic and fun. 😉

        1) Many cultures observed the skies in the ancient world. The ancient Greeks calculated the circumference of the Earth pretty well but I don’t give much credence to their stories of fighting gods. I wonder what exactly National Geographic meant by “instantly”. The word tends to vary in meaning depending on the context.

        2) Similar ideas can emerge without the people needing to be in contact. After all, the common thing was that these civilizations were looking at the skies and could see that the Sun and Moon had affect on day/night, seasons and animal migration. Naturally, they created stories about the objects they could see in the night sky. These civilizations also saw comets and supernovae so would be familiar with “planets” (any “wanderer” was called a planet in those days) appearing. It was perfectly rational to assume that more would appear in the future. More comets and supernovae have appeared.

        3) Thanks for adding the info about IRAS. It sounded interesting so I looked it up. It turns out that astronomers using IRAS did initially find some objects that hadn’t been identified. This is often the case when you survey the sky at a new wavelength (or higher resolution) and discover new types of astronomical object. As far as I can tell, those objects got identified with external galaxies (ultra-luminus infra-red galaxies; ULIRGs) and gas clouds in our Galaxy.

        4) The climate is changing. I’m sure most meteorologists would agree with that.

        5) One problem with answering this question is that we don’t have brilliant records of the details of Jupiter’s weather until after Voyager I visited. One problem is that ground-based observations had limited resolution because of the Earth’s atmosphere. For instance, a large spot was seen in the 17th century but there seem to be no mentions of it again until the 19th century. We don’t know if that is because it faded out (and a new one formed) or because nobody bothered to look. The interesting thing is that cloud systems on Jupiter can last a very long time – much longer than on Earth – but that doesn’t mean that they are static. Since Voyager I technology and techniques have improved and, since the 1990s, even backyard astronomers can now use CCD cameras and “lucky imaging” to get very impressive images of the cloud bands. So, unfortunately, we only have good records for a relatively short period of time. We are still learning.

        Clear skies.

I despise these people that try to scare people who know nothing about comets, etc except maybe what they saw in the movies. If it happens, there is nothing we can do about it anyway, but, those little boogers come our way all the time. This one person who is spreading fear stated dates that nothing happened on and says that Lenin caused the Japan earthquake and a few others, and it isn’t even close to us yet.

    Donny · August 25, 2011 at 13:08

    Well Margaret,
That’s actually not entirely true. Top people are working on so called “deflect scenario’s” as we speak. The idea is to park a spaceship next to the asteriod or comet. If the space ship weighs enough (couple of tons), the spaceship and object’s mass will cause them to attract eachother. The spaceship will then try to prevent that from happening with the help of booster rockets. Everytime you prevent it, the comet will actually be towed away from it’s original path. Check out Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s story about this:

So there is definitly something that can be done.

kiares · August 16, 2011 at 22:22

to admin: please could you comment on 2005 yu55. NASA jpl has this at just 200,000 miles from earth on 9 Nov 2011 and 150,000 from our moon. maybe the whole elenin scenario is being escalated to hide the fact that 2005 yu55 is posing a much larger threat to us. coincidence that the American emergency broadcast is also planned for that very day. Looking on NASA jpl orbital diagram at this is quite frightening.your professional view in a little detail would really be most appreciated.

    admin · August 17, 2011 at 07:16

nonsense? Unless you’ve wrote somewhere on your blog about the orbital paths of Asteroid 2005 YU55, Comet 45P/Honda-Mrkos-Pajdusakova, and Comet P/2006 T1 (Levy),I think I’m providing valuable information to your readers about the events coming this Fall. Is it nonsense to write that Asteroid 2005 YU55 will closest to Earth on November 9, 2011 at .0022AU?? YU55 is expected to cross between the orbit of the Moon and the Earth passing the Earth by only 200000 miles.
That’s a scientific fact that many people should be aware of.
I respect the fact that you’re writing about Comet Elenin when many of your colleagues refuse to. I’m just telling the rest of the story …..

    admin · August 11, 2011 at 21:38

Hi, if you were just discussing the orbits of comets and asteroids, I’d have thought that was great, but you’re not.

I see astrology which is nonsense, I see you’re promoting the just plain stupid “Comet Elenin is causing earthquakes” notion. I see lots of incoherent fearmongering based on a grab-bag of superstition and I see spreading of alarming (yet completely vacuous) rumours . You might be OK with that but there are people out there who seem genuinely frightened by this. Have you considered what effect is this stuff having on them?

You are telling a story, yes, but just a story with no basis in reality.

JJ · August 11, 2011 at 11:42

heard there was suppose to be something else passing by the other side of the planet at roughly the same time – can any confirm this? I’ve heard a strange asteroid – strange because i heard it has a slow rotation unlike other asteroids.

bodhi · August 10, 2011 at 14:17

There is more to this story –

    admin · August 11, 2011 at 08:37

Sorry, but the stuff at that link is just a jumble of nonsense. Don’t waste your time.

    Skywatcher · September 14, 2011 at 07:54

Bodhi, do not take the descriptions of the woman and dragon to mean the constellations. They are symbols- the Lady travailing to give birth is a symbol for the Christian church, and the dragon for those who persecute her.I do not expect a lot of people to believe this, but it is true. as fo the comet, it seems to be dissipating so will be of no concern soon enough. There are other more dramatic celestial events to come in the next few years though, so stay tuned!

JD · August 6, 2011 at 21:55

If the comet is heading right for us and the sun, you won’t see a tail because it will be stretching out behind it, but admin would know that wouldn’t he.

    admin · August 7, 2011 at 15:11

Hi, thanks for the comment. Do have a look at where STEREO-B is located with respect to Earth and the Sun before you worry about the comet heading straight for us!

Orkun · August 5, 2011 at 20:12

Hello Nice pictures, but i wonder when will the HD pictures come? From Hi-1 and so on. Cant wait to see them. And between, For fred, Alignments are common in our solar system, every new and full moon there is a alignment between earth sun and moon( just one example), over the year there are plenty others.

Fred · August 4, 2011 at 21:42

What do you make of the people saying that large-scale earthquakes occur when there is an alignment between the Earth, Comet, and the Sun? I recall reading a white paper on this topic. Thank you!

    admin · August 5, 2011 at 08:42

Hi, in short it’s nonsense! If you to know why, I can only recommend you read Revisiting Comet 2010 X1 Elenin, Earthquakes, Astronomical Alignments and Mensur Omerbashich (link) at the Astroblogger site which comprehensively dissects these silly claims.

      brian · August 26, 2011 at 22:00

if you look up earthquakes on wiki and look at the most powerful one , going back to 1700s , then cross reference them on you can see every one has planets aligned, but not nothing as powerful as what is going on on the 26 sept with earth elenin sun mercury aligned, thats without solar flares and leonards

        admin · August 30, 2011 at 09:05

I would not trust, it’s just more silly superstition.

        Why do you believe it?

hotep_x · August 3, 2011 at 23:07

Where is the tail? Elenin position near the sun at this time a tail should be showing.

    admin · August 4, 2011 at 13:28

Leonid Elenin himself says it has not developed a tail yet, hopefully we’ll see it develop soon.

    admin · August 9, 2011 at 12:29

If you look at the latest image on this page, it looks as though a tail has begun to develop.
