Zeta Reticuli, a dim binary system of Sun-like stars only 39.5 light years away in the little constellation of Reticulum is strangely well-known. Why is it so famous? This system was once identified as the home of the little grey-faced and black-eyed humanoids who allegedly abducted Barney and Betty Hill and ever since has appeared in popular culture as the quintessential location of extraterrestrial mystery. What do we really know about these stars?

The twin stars of Zeta 2 Reticuli can be seen to the right. (image credit: Google Sky)

The twin stars of Zeta Reticuli can be seen at the far right. (image credit: Google Sky)

Reticulum (literally “the net” but used in the sense of an archaic form of eyepiece reticule) is a constellation of the southern hemisphere’s sky (we cannot see it from Northern Ireland). Diamond-shaped, the constellation lacks bright stars and is apparently an unimpressive sight. Only just visible to the unaided eye, Zeta Reticuli was first referred to as such in 1756. Can I just repeat that Zeta Reticuli has been seen in the sky without a telescope for centuries. Anyone who tells you it was not discovered until after the Hill’s story became famous is utterly wrong.  The whole identification of this system as a homeworld to ufonauts is based on the thorough and painstaking work of Marjorie Fish, which is now believed to be incorrect being based on out-dated data on star positions.
Through a telescope Zeta Reticuli can be clearly seen to be two stars (you can do this without a telescope if the sky is dark enough). The two stars are both very similar in mass, diameter, temperature and brightness to our own Sun (Zeta 1, a G3 class star, is slightly smaller, cooler and more orange than the Sun, while Zeta 2 is G2 class, almost identical to the Sun). They orbit a common centre of mass approximately midway between them and are separated by at least 3750 AU (about 0.06 light years). By the standards set by objects in our own Solar System, this is a huge distance; about a hundred times as far as Pluto is on average from the Sun. A beam of light from one of the stars would take three weeks to reach its companion.
This is great enough a separation for each star in the duo to have its own planetary system.  Unlike some other  binary systems where the stars are closer, the skies of any Reticulan planet would not feature two suns. From the planets of one star, the other star would be a brilliantly bright star about 30 times as bright as Venus looks in Earth’s sky and would be visible even in the daytime sky. Each star could have its own habitable zone (or Goldilocks zone, a region where there is enough warmth from a star to allow water to persist as a liquid on the surface of a planet). Another myth about the Zeta Reticuli system I have encountered states that emissions from the two stars contribute to a dangerous level of background radiation in their vicinity. The two stars are too far apart for this and this idea seems to have been dreamed up by the perpetrators of the staggeringly inept Project SERPO hoax.
What are the prospects for life in this star system? Both stars are similar to the Sun and if they have suitable planets it is not impossible that life has arisen there. Older sources claim these stars to be relatively old (6-8 billion years old is often quoted) but more recent evidence acquired by analysing the stars’ light with spectroscopes suggests these are young stars, possibly only two billion years old (compared to our own Sun’s 4.5 billion year age). Their youth may count against the possibly of higher forms of life having evolved on Zeta Reticulan worlds. After all there has been life on Earth for most of the planet’s existence, for most of this time terrestrial life has been single-celled micro-organisms, whereas multicellular life, plants and animals and so on, appeared only in the last 600 million years. If the story of life on Earth is typical (and who knows for sure), I would not bet on there being any little grey men, or indeed ladies, on any Zeta Reticulan planets unless they were colonised from elswhere. I should note that there is some controversy over these stars’ ages, see the comments section if you want to know more.
The stars’ similarity to our own has prompted astronomers to search for planets there, but no planets have yet been discovered around either star. There has been a false alarm though. In 1996 astronomers at the European Southern Observatory announced that they had observed evidence of a giant planet around Zeta 2. The planet appeared to be tugging on the star causing it to make slight rhythmic movements, suggesting the planet had a mass about a quarter that of Jupiter and was moving in a close orbit (0.14 AU) with a period of 18.9 days. This would have been an example of what astronomers call a ‘hot Jupiter’ and would be a hopeless prospect for any kind of life. Within days, however, this discovery announcement was retracted as it was recognised that the wobbles in the star’s motion could also be just the star’s slight but regular pulsations. Of course UFO true believers still tell the story of “the scientists who reported a planet at Zeta Reticulum but the government made them cover it up”. To the best of my knowledge, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has never observed this system. Why? Well, its not a conspiracy, rather there is no point as the HST could not resolve any planets at this distance, this is something it was not designed to do.
In 2010, another team of astronomers announced that far-infrared wavelength observations with ESA’s Herschel space telescope showed a ring of cold dust and ice about 100 AU across around Zeta 2 Reticuli. Almost certainly there are comet nuclei and dwarf planets, analogues of our Pluto, Eris, Makemake and Haumea, in this ring. This debris disc is not symmetrical, a possible indication that the material is being gravitationally effected by an unseen planetary companion. To be honest, based on the distribution of exoplanets in the Milky Way it would be very surprising if in fact there were no planets in the Zeta Reticulum system. However as our methods for finding exoplanets are still pretty limited it may be a long time before we know for sure.
Until we actually discover any Zeta Reticulan planets the best we can do is watch out for them in science fiction. “Reticulans” were name-checked in the X-Files and appeared on screen as “Chigs” in Space: Above and Beyond. By far and away the best-known fictional world in the vicinity of the Zeta 2 Reticuli system is LV-426 (also called Acheron) from the Alien movies and related works. On this world humans first encountered the awful acid-blooded, drooling horrors sometimes called Xenomorphs (yes, I am deliberately ignoring the Aliens vs Predator movies and I advise you to do the same). LV-426, which went unnamed in the first film, is a tiny rocky world, apparently one of several satellites of a gas giant planet. Originally, its tortured landscape was overlaid by a cold but violently stormy atmosphere of nitrogen with methane, carbon dioxide and ammonia but by its second appearance in Aliens it had been terraformed to give it an atmosphere and climate compatible with human life. The moon was apparently devoid of native life; Xenomorph eggs were found there in a derelict starship belonging to some other enigmatic alien civilisation (I also prefer to pretend Prometheus never happened).
LV-426 is completely fictitious and not based on any speculation by scientists, nor is the “LV-” numbering scheme used for planets (also in Prometheus)  a real piece of scientific methodology. Dan O’Bannon (1946-2009), who wrote the original story for Alien probably used the name Zeta Reticuli after seeing it in an article about the Hill UFO account.
Zeta Reticuli is an interesting nearby binary star system, but there is no evidence to suggests it is the home of extraterrestrial visitors to our world.

Bob Lazar – who states he’s SEEN craft in secret base hangers says the dissertation [info he was given before project involvement] claims exotic metals and ‘power sources’ (9 generators I believe he said there were, including one that was “cut” and exploded killing one person – scientist/technician Bob replaced) says this material originated from Zeta Reticuli. Whether it was ZR1 or ZR2 system I’m not clear on that. Pretty much everything Lazar claimed from him leaving the project to now has been proven to be accurate and true, the fact that they tried to erase his involvement to the elusive element 115 (which was touted as a hoax before it was revealed to be very real). I have no problem writing off ANY information that any military or government body releases or speaks for or against in regards to aliens. Information is added to distort the truth, and information is either subtracted or changed to distort the truth also. The power of words is witchcraft if it’s socially engineered correctly.

With the surfacing of blockchain technology, development appears far from over, and new and innovative processes and solutions surface. We aim to orchestrate the adoption of a completely decentralized ecosystem through distributed ledger technology. It certainly is a very exciting time to be working in the blockchain area and since lots of people adopt this disruptive solution, it is going to conceivably allow us to construct a further safeguarded, adequate and open world.

One problem I have with many of these comments is that they share a common assumption–which I consider fatally flawed–that alien beings would look, think, and behave more or less as we do, whatever their origins; that their thought processes would be intelligible to us, or more importantly, that our thought processes and cultures would be of particular interest to them.

On our planet, there are at least three species that are arguably as intelligent in many ways as we humans are, although they lack technological sophistication: the bottle-nosed dolphin, the humpbacked whale, and the elephant. We know that these beings communicate at a highly sophisticated level, yet in no case have we been able even to scratch the surface of their languages, even though they are all relatively close to us in evolutionary terms.

I think it is naive and supremely presumptuous for us to assume that we would be able to communicate with alien beings from another planetary system on any level, especially a civilization of intelligent beings that, were they to have the ability to reach our planet from interstellar space, would probably be so advanced tat they could observe us without ever giving notice of their presence, were they to investigate our species.

We may well have been visited and studied, or are presently being examined, by highly intelligent lifeforms from another planet. But the naivete of groups such as SETI is astonishing, in its assumption that we would be fortunate enough to encounter an alien civilization virtually at exactly the same stage of technological development as we are. Think about it: even a couple of hundred years ago the brightest scientists on Earth would have absolutely no idea what a television or IPad was, were we to transport it back in time.

Any beings from another star system must be hundreds, if not more likely, many tens of thousands of years beyond us, in terms of their technological accomplishments. We might well appear to them as we would regard ants or bees: passably interesting life forms, but virtually impossible to communicate with, due to our (from their point of view) primitive state.

And even if they had equipment that could render pictorially coherent reproductions of,say, our television, what would they make of what they saw?
What if they had a completely different notion of what they considered music, assuming that they might well be tone-deaf by our standards? What if they were water-based beings that had no sense of boundaries or nations?

They might well look at our gyrating rock stars, our sports contests, and our endless wars, indifference to the climate and capacity for self-destruction, without necessarily having any understanding or comprehension of what was occurring, other than to conclude that we were, in the main, non-rational creatures that should be possibly monitored, but otherwise of no genuine significance.

jaxk · November 23, 2017 at 01:30

I do not question the validity of other beings from other worlds or star systems. I do question people like Nancy Lieder who have marginalized and monetized the belief in Zeta Reticuli and what she is supposedly told, for a dollar.

Perhaps they are real, perhaps they are not, but it’s an interesting and neverending mental quest.

Will Doohan · September 9, 2017 at 06:18

Thank you for the interesting astronomical facts about the Zeta Reticuli star system. I’ve been a science fiction fan and occasional UFO enthusiast who has wondered for years if the ‘greys’ are real, and if they are, are they really from that star system? It would be amazing if it were real, but like most UFO tales, there is very little evidence.

    Robert · November 1, 2017 at 11:50

No evidence does not mean it is not true.

    Darren Hughes · November 29, 2017 at 22:12

There is evidence all the time: there are radar printouts, marks on the ground from craft making landings, burnt people and cars (radioactive type), there’s eye witness accounts (that’s good enough to convict in a murder trial and cause a death sentence), there are photographs and more.

The problem is… that people want to believe, already do and the people don’t want to believe, won’t do any research.

      Miro · February 24, 2018 at 13:29

      Hello Darren,

I have a question: there is a lot more evidence that these 100% fake greys are, well, 100% fake than there is “evidence” that they’re real

        Biff · July 21, 2018 at 16:13

Kids sometimes where fake shark fins to fool people at beaches causing mass panic. Its been done many times. Does that mean ALL sharks are fake?

It is human nature to emulate and copy things. Kids raised by dogs loose ability to speak and walk on all fours like a dog. It is expected that there will be fake greys, expect hoaxes etc. It would be strange for this not to happen.

This causes some people to only focus on the fakes and then ASSUME if one is fake they all must be.

Most isotopes or uranium are NOT fissionable. Does this mean ALL of them are not? Using your logic they would have quit after a few isotopes were not and assume “they all are not”

Something is coming to this planet, its obvious looking at the data. A much hazier question is where are they from or what do they eat etc.

Baby steps, focus on the easier to swallow mass sightings, military encounters and military nuclear silo observations.

You don’t even have to drop your bag of fritos, all can be researched from you tube, or online book.

I was just thinking about something… it’s a what if, but… what if the Greys do exist and have superior unregulated means and technologies which could allow them to effectively strip mine sections of the galaxy in ways we wouldn’t even consider… maybe this is how they’re able to manufacture such technologies…

    Cody G · January 18, 2017 at 06:05

But it may correlate with the lack of metals causing the stars to appear younger than they really are… and with their seemingly infinite supply of ufos and whatever else… it makes sense when you consider they could be basically a legion of biological robots who reproduce by cloning… each clone could then be hardwired to technologies to make them Borg~like… they could in this case likely be slaves to their own occultist overlords who collect, retain, backup and encrypt all superior knowledge of the cosmos and beyond… I believe this may be the case… I personally believe they are the original serpent race who intermingled their genetics with reptilian DNA. 2 distinctly different creatures who by scientific analysis appear to be of the same origins… But really, the serpent is intellect where the reptile is adaptable, amphibious, and has a keen blending ability… mesh them together and picture crocodile and a cobra and tell me u don’t see what I’m getting at

First of all id like to put down my beliefs. From what i read online.

1. Earth was put into place in the current solar system by some higher civilisation.
2. Since we hear of this abrupt beginning of animals and fruits in our history it suggests to me they were brought here from another planet.
3. I believe we are seen as vulnerable by other species.

Could i suggest if someone is rude that you just put a **** over any rude words. I enjoy freedom of speech and hearing different viewpoints. You yourself have accused people directly or indirectly of being dishonest or fictional. Some people take big offense to that. You are also being hypocritical in having absolute views when you havent known or seen anything other than what youve seen yourself. If there is no current possibility of visiting zeta reticuli then you have no possibility to make absolute claims yourself.

What i like to conclude on is that i feel very aware of the need to value this planet and let us not be selfish or to take away something from the future that previous generations enjoyed.

Dear D, thank you for your comments. You are entitled to your beliefs but you must understand that until evidence to confirm them becomes available they will remain personal beliefs and not accepted facts.

I have looked over the comments to this article, and I have only removed content for three reasons:

pure streams of rude or aggressive language with no other content (if there was any kind of rational comment I have tried to salvage it by editing it)
content that has been copied and pasted from other sites (presumably without the permission of the original author)
lengthy “general” comments on UFOs, extraterrestrial life or accounts of personal experiences (I am in no way saying these sorts of material are without value, simply that the comments section of this article is not the right place for publishing them).

I am happy for people to discuss their beliefs and speculation here, however this is the blog of a scientific institution, so I must present the scientific case. There is no evidence at present of life of any kind or even planets in the Zeta Reticuli star system.

excuse me, I can’t understand: if Zeta reticuli have been our ancestors, our creators……why we are evolved and they not? Why do (and quiet all extraterrestrial races does)they look so ugly and have insects aspect ? If Anunaki (with much better appearance ) build first the lulum and in second stage zeta’s build on our dna, also they must have progressed in evolution, doesn’t they??? Nobody consider this..?
and: why this “secret” around extraterrestrial witnesses ?? Should’t they contact us? WHO wants that we don’t know about them: they himself or a “GOVERNMENT over the mankind” …..In fact: W.REICH pointed the DOR CLOUDBUSTER against heaven, and then appeared regularly every day, HUNDRED OF UFOS !!! They where not only “PENCIL POINTS”in the sky, but clearly visible to all of them (scientists) He, W.Reich made it always clear: THE E A S will one near day, come to INVADE us!!
and: one is clear from my understanding, reading W.Reich: the UFO’S appear everywhere there is NEGATIVITY (Deadly orgon energy) that means, deserts, factory invironmental toxins…….quiet noones is talking about that……In clear pure areas, they don’t appear as much!!! Obviously we talk about A CERTAIN KIND OF RASE, NOT ALL THE UFOS…….

According my records there are other documented alien craft crashes here and extraterrestrials from Zeta, and as a scientist when you omit our technology to see or visualise other planets, then everything you say B,.sh… because you twist and stretch lies truth with lies. I don’t know of any other scientist who would conclude binary stars are unequivocally uninhabitable unless you have proof. Additionally, considering humans may not even be from Earth, why would you say intelligent life cannot exist in Zeta due to our galaxy being formed a billion or more years ahead of Zeta’s when homos here have only advanced in the last century, not withstanding Astronomy was brought to earth up to 120 K years or at the very least 10 to 6 thou years ago by the Annukii, and the proof is in Sumerian scrolls, this is where I say your an idiot! Dear Brandon, thank you for the comment. I cannot see any near-term search for planets around Zeta Reticuli as it doesn’t really fit into any strategy for finding planets. It’s a long and exacting task to do this and astronomers would prefer targets with a higher chance of success.

Barry · April 26, 2016 at 15:10

What if there was a person who had a story regarding extra terrestrial life , but their only evidence is their word on their experience ? You wouldn’t believe them anyway. This person may not be a scientist and have no idea how to speak in scientific terms, but this person might be able to tell you some things that would make scientists and religious people rethink everything they think they know.

    admin · April 26, 2016 at 16:36

Dear Barry, thank you for your comment. If someone did have genuine, verifiable scientific knowledge that only have come from an extraterrestrial source they would be taken very seriously indeed by scientists (who, remember, must be sceptical or are failing at their job) even if they no supporting physical evidence.

The problem is that no one ever has presented such knowledge.

      Barry · April 27, 2016 at 01:40

Yes very true, I understand. The problem to me is, that religious people rely on faith, scientists rely on scientific fact and I go by some experiences I’ve had since I was a child. I’m not talking about abduction either, nor am I talking about zeta reticuli. my experiences are a like a higher state of consciousness, or as some people would call it, astral travel, I used to think it was a dream. I spent most of my childhood afraid of when these experiences came about, and later in life I decided to seek help as I thought I was insane. This didn’t help so I decided not to fight these experiences and let them run their course. I know people are skeptical and they have a right to be. Would you be interested in reading about where these experiences have led me in detail ? I’ve only ever spoken in detail to a psychiatrist , not friends and family due to fear of them thinking I’m a nut. If you would like to hear about it just let me know where I can send it to you whether it be mail or email. It will take some time to put it all to writing, but if you’re willing to read it let me know.

The whole notion that Zeta Reiculi had not been discovered before Betty Hill’s map is from the made-for-TV movie.

Here’s an actual and detailed account from NICAP of Marjorie Fish’s actual scientific process and the work of others to confirm or deny it. At least, her analysis was extensive. Even many of those who did further analysis of the map largely concluded that the “home base” might have been more distant than Zeta, but on that same trajectory from Earth.

The real mystery here is how a woman with zero astronomical knowledge could have drawn a map from memory under hypnosis that has been scientifically correlated to an actual star system in our cosmic neighborhood or at least lays out the path toward another star system in a way that correlates with real systems like Zeta.

To,say Marjorie Fish’s work has been overturned is a stretch except in the minds of skeptics already disinclined to believe.

Most of the inhabitants of the USA did not originate from North America. The author has made a lot of assumptions about inter-stellar mobility.

Colin did your ever have a conversation with Stanton Friedman about the revised age of Zeta Reticuli to 1.5-2.00 billion years, and if so what was his response?

    admin · August 17, 2015 at 08:29

Dear Steve, my sole interaction with Stanton Friedman was approving a comment he left on this blog.

Ok… Now that we have found many things that HUMANS have MESSED UP ON when it comes to knowledge of space… Where, we are selves, are saying… “This is scientifically Impossible!!!” Get a LIFE for all the stuff you say… OH I KNOW EVERYTHING stuff!! We are NOW finding out WE DON’T KNOW MUCH in the Cosmic Scheme of things. If you still have your ignorant closed minded “I know everything” gibberish… Get your Head Examined!! The Possibility that Betty and Barney Hill could sketch such detail in a stellar area during that time reading what they could find in books is simple trash! It was just a simple 2 suns Betty drew it was more complex. As for your trash about… “The entire system could not support life” Nonsense!! we are finding THOUSANDS of planets supporting life, now with Hubble… You idiot’s with fancy degrees have such big heads and ROCK HEAD ways… You have been FAR SURPASSED to things we are just now finding out with Hubble… Aren’t you the mindless pre-historic cave men!!!

Yeah Science and Religion are Two Different things
I guess NASA has gained very much success in keeping Aliens Secrets !! All facts and figures hidden from the minds of public… Which we as public won’t ever be able to get any proof of Aliens …even they come and keep taking away humans and testing them.. Cause not just NASA but Manyyy Secret Agencies are Dying to Hide it All with its Roots … Their Agents are Everywhere !!

The acronym “LV” perhaps points to a biblical reference. In Leviticus chapter 4, verse 26 (LV 4:26) we can read a verse about a burnt offering as a means for atonement for corrupt leadership, which would suit the major theme in the Alien Saga.

Leviticus 4:26 ►

Then he must burn all the goat’s fat on the altar, just as he does with the peace offering. Through this process, the priest will purify the leader from his sin, making him right with the LORD, and he will be forgiven.

For the Prometheus reference (LV-223) that would be:
Leviticus 22:3 ►

“Say to them: ‘For the generations to come, if any of your descendants is ceremonially unclean and yet comes near the sacred offerings that the Israelites consecrate to the LORD, that person must be cut off from my presence. I am the LORD.

Dear Colin, thanks for your comment, but i liked Seth Shostaks comments at SETI better!

Honestly the Hill map can’t be regarded as evidence for anything!

Here’s an Astronomer’s opinion you might want to read.

Chapter 3 (page 33) of Fuller’s book the starts off on October 19, 1961, a month after the abduction of Betty and Barney Hill. Walter Webb (Astronomer) and lecturer on the staff of the Hayden Planetarium in Boston opened his mail to read a letter from Richard Hall, who was then the secretary and now Assistant Director of the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomenon in Washington. As a Scientific Advisor to NICAP, Walter Webb occasionally investigated the more serious and puzzling UFO reports in the New England area, drafting detailed document for Washington when the merits of the case warranted it. Hall’s letter included a copy of a letter that Betty Hill had written to Major Keyhoe and suggested to Webb that it might be worthwhile to drive the eighty miles north of Boston to their residence in Portsmouth to investigate the case. Webb, who had joined the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, shortly after his graduation from college in 1956, had been interested in Unidentified Flying Objects since 1951, when as a counselor at a boys’ camp in Michigan, he had made a sighting while training campers in the use of a telescope. So now we have an astronomer who has personally seen a UFO.

Page 34: Webb’s first reaction to Richard Hall’s letter was reluctance. It was plain that this case involved a report of the movement of beings on the craft, and Webb was skeptical of this type of sighting. He drove up to Portsmouth on October 21, 1961, with his skeptical attitude unchanged. In his mind were thoughts of the sensational nature of the claim, the possibility that the Hills might be seeking publicity, perpetrating a hoax, or suffering from a mental aberration.

On the other hand he felt that Betty’s letter was extremely literate, an honest and straightforward account of a frightening experience which had happened to two people. He would reserve judgment until after his interview, which, he resolved, would be thorough and painstaking with special attention to finding flaws in the story. As an interviewer with a scientific background, he was certain he could create a slip-up if the Hill’s story was spurious, and he would not hesitate to crack the story if he could. He arrived at the Hill’s house at about noon.

Page 35: The interview began shortly after noon, and continued with little interruption until eight that evening. I was so amazed, impressed by both the Hills and their account,” Walter Webb said, “that we skipped lunch and went through the afternoon and early evening. During that time, I cross-examined them together, separately, together, re-questioned them again and again. I tried to make them slip up somewhere, and I couldn’t; I simply couldn’t.*

Theirs was an iron-clad story. They seemed to me to be sincere, honest couple driving home from vacation, late at night on a lonely road, when suddenly something unknown and un-definable descended on them. Something entirely foreign or alien to their existence.”

I talk to Walter Webb 6 months ago…and nothing has changed.

My last thought: it’s very strange that J. Allen Hynek would switch sides and become a UFO believer, or that Clyde Tombaugh would report seeing UFOs.

My opinion: We’re not special as Carl Sagan said, and we are not alone-Just like the French and Chinese have said.

    admin · November 4, 2014 at 11:49

Hi Steve, Thanks for your comments. I hoped I was clear that I think the Hills were honest folk who sincerely believed that they experienced something extraordinary. However Betty’s drawing is not proof of extraterrestrial contact.

As far as I understand it, Hynek went from sceptic to believer in alien spaceships, but then started to change to a third position (based on lack of ‘nuts and bolts’ evidence) that UFOs were actually some kind of intangible psychic phenomenon. I was disappointed by this when I read his books back in the day as I was more interested in alien spaceships! Does it not say something that Hynek believed eye witness reports but doubted UFOs were physically real vehicles?

Did Clyde Tombaugh report sightings of UFOs or alien spacecraft? It’s an important distinction!

You will have to explain your comment about the “French and Chinese”. Were you referring to GEIPAN?

Bar Girl · October 30, 2014 at 18:07

Betty was interviewed in 1999. She said they were not grays, in fact she thought that they were Air Force people at first. Everything “debunked” was never claimed by anyone other than skeptics.

In reference to Stanton Friedman’s entry and discussion about the formulation of Fish’s theory, i have some very important statements made by Fish’s team.

1974 Astronomy Magazine article **The Zeta Reticuli Incident** by then editor Terence Dickinson.

Terence Dickinson once said that “Stars cannot be moved around to optimize the desired resemblance.” Unfortunately that advice seems to have been ignored, as Fish alters the star map by drastically cutting down the gap between them to make it appear as if it could be Zeta Reticuli. This sounds like he was lukewarm to her theory….

The two large nickel sized stars are the central feature of the star map, they stand out, and you can immediately sense that the leader being was trying to show Betty something very important, and that he wanted her to understand. The dimensions of the star map was said to be three feet by two (36’x 24’) and using these given dimensions, gives us the estimated spatial distance between the two large nickel sized stars as drawn of at least six to eight inches. They not in close proximity to one another. Marjorie Fish made the same mistake as Betty Hill did by calling them base stars, but Fish took this one step further by altering the spatial distance between them in order to claim that this was their home world and the start point in her Zeta Reticuli Interpretion. Jeffrey Kretsch called her alteration a incongruity.

I was able to briefly speak to Mr. Kretsch several months ago, after advising him that Marjorie Fish had past away, and he told me that he never met her, which was very surprising.

i developed the Hill-Wilson Star map as a result of researching and studying an ancedotal story which is posted on my web site. The triangle was discovered below the Big Dipper, and the top of the triangle is 6 Cvn, with HR4668 and HR4783. The star directly to the right of the triangle is 61 Ursae Major, with 52 Ursae above and to the right. My theory has identified the hub star as 20 Leo Minor (6.5 Billion year) old spectral G3Va. We Earthling’s are in orbit around the lower of the two large nickel sized stars, making us the prime spot to view the star map. (Vantage point and viewing angle) as opposed to Fish’s silly ” slice of space.” If you look at the star map you can see very heavy banding between them (their star and Sol.)

The star map is actually fairly accurate as drawn. You’ll find complete details on my website.

Steve Pearse

FYI: 20 Leo Minor is on Turnbills 2003 Sun Life List.

Part 2: Stanton Friedman comments

Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience** with Kathleen Marden, Betty’s niece,There is a chapter on the star map.

But the problem is that there was nothing new in their book….

i published an article in the MUFON Journal dated August 2009 advising the UFO community that 2 of the 3 stars of her triangle were invalid because new astronomical data places them outside of the boundary of her working model which they called “Psyche.” This becomes a very big problem… because her triangle has never existed, and the double whammy is the fact that Betty Hill had said that the triangle was very prominent. To this day this glaring problem has not been explained by Mr. Friedman.
No triangle-no theory. The third killer is the position of Star #10-which is supposed to be directly to the right of the triangle.

That my friends should tell you that the Fish’s ZR theory is washed up….

His final statement: “Certainly even a mere 2 billion years should have been enough to get technology started. ”

Sorry Stanton: You’re wrong…bad science

Life: Yes-but not old enough to count to 8 on their fingers at this stage of development. Assuming that one day they crawl out of the ocean on their flippers and evolve another 2 billion years.

Re: Stanton Friedman’s comments (April 26, 2014)

1. The aliens did not tell Betty or Barney where they were from.

This is true which includes Zeta 1 and Zeta 2 Reticuli

The star map that she drew was said to be unusually accurate as drawn, which means that her Base Star manuever to merge them altered the map. Remove the lines and there is little resemblance to Betty Hills Star map. She also said they were single stars-which they are not.

2. I was the one who found her obituary three months after she died, and her family didn’t change the statement that she had renounced her ZR Interpretation

Frank · October 22, 2014 at 17:20

I understand. I basically agree with you. Ancient Aliens is not bad science it’s just plain and simple fiction with a touch of science thrown in to make it more credible.
I go back to the Fermi Paradox. If there really were a bunch of “Ancient Aliens” out there they would have colonized the earth long ago before people ever evolved.
Of course a great many of the “Ancient Aliens” believers say they did and messed with monkey DNA to make us!
It never ceases to amaze me what people are capable of believing!

Frank · October 20, 2014 at 20:15

I see the show as entertainment.
One of my favorite shows produced in Great Britain is I, Claudius. The show took a great many liberties with historical fact but that’s TV and it made the storyline more interesting. I do understand your point though since so many people believe everything they see on the television.
I also enjoyed Cosmos (Sagan & Tyson versions) and the Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman (not a scientist). Both of these shows also explored (in my opinion) some theories that are unproven at present.
My greatest fear is that the “though police” take over and only allow their account of the truth be told.

    admin · October 21, 2014 at 09:56

Hi Frank, comparing Ancient Aliens and I, Claudius isn’t really valid as I, Claudius is not a documentary but fiction inspired by fact, at no stage was it claimed to be a historically accurate reconstruction.

I really see a difference between a documentary script that includes informed speculation about things that are uncertain and a documentary script that includes stuff that the writers know is untrue.

Like you I have no desire to see the media censored, I am simply appalled by the deliberately false information broadcast in some shows and horrified by how uncritically it is accepted by some viewers.

Frank · October 17, 2014 at 14:21

Ancient Aliens is simply a TV show. I think people watch it because they want to believe it and it is occasionally interesting. The key is to see it for what it is, entertainment not science. I doubt even is creators actually believe it but because people watch it they make money.
I have no problem with this. Capitalism is good for our society and free speech is important. If people choose to believe in Bigfoot, Atlantis and Ancient Aliens so be it. The world is still round!

    admin · October 20, 2014 at 12:16

Hi Frank, thanks for your comments. I’m curious about Ancient Aliens (which I’ve never seen, I’m not sure if it is even shown here) because so many commenters here are so passionate about it. I’m glad you accept that the creators of Ancient Aliens know it is untrue, but then why doesn’t it disturb you that it is presented as a factually true documentary series?

There are words to describe people who make up and spread falsehoods and they are not flattering.

mike · October 10, 2014 at 10:05

Like Joseph g said above, you want proof watch “anchiant aliens” series. Its clear that advanced technology was used thousands of years ago. Also all civilizations say the same things, from South America, Asia and the Egyptians.
Something come down to earth, were they Alians? Yes. Were they from another star system? Who knows. Were they from “Heaven”? I believe so.
One things clear to me, it supports stronger evidence then the theory of evolution.

Thanks for the article admin.

    admin · October 10, 2014 at 10:17

Thanks for your comment. May I ask you three questions? (I’m interested in answers from anyone.)

Are you really sure that the creators of Ancient Aliens are truthful?

If you think Ancient Aliens is factually true, why do you believe this? What convinced you?

If you think the Ancient Aliens programme is factually true, why do you think astronomers, historians and archeologists believe it to be nonsense?

      TJ · January 6, 2015 at 10:52

ancient aliens is just speculation by self-proclaimed experts of events in history that simply have yet to be explained. it is nothing to bring up in this discussion. however, if you look up out of place artifacts found around the world of strange unknown objects encased in rock that formed millions of years ago one can definitely draw some interesting conclusions of their own. i certainly have mine. if aliens did happen upon our solar system in my opinion they would most certainly have came to earth because the one thing unique about earth in this solar system is the existence of metals in their monatomic forms. these monatomic elements are supercunductors and i believe they play a huge role in interstellar space travel as well as many many other things. i enjoyed the article and all of your feedback and hope you read this and check some things i mentioned

    SN · January 28, 2015 at 08:58

I watch ancient aliens a lot on history. Some of the episodes are interesting and make you think, “there might just be aliens out there,” but some episodes are just stupid… For example aliens and Bigfoot, aliens and the U.S. presidents, etc…

Joseph G. Markle (ultra-terrestrial) · October 4, 2014 at 04:24

Sad how science is always so un-imaginative. You humans will never know what bores the ETS find you to be! Do you think they like coming to late great PLanet Earth and having to endure such primitive humanoids preoccupied with wealth, power and mundane emotions? They might find us as pathetic and amusing as….pets or worse…insects…if they have the technology to get this far. Some of us can imagine the omnisicence and omnipotence of God and hope it is universal……irrespective of the limitations of science which will probably NEVER discover the TRUTH. Just being able to think about such a thing is the key to KNOWLEDGE.
ANCIENT ALIENS SERIES has shown clear proof of ET involvement in the history of planet earth; so many archaological ruins could not have been built without advanced technology not available to the alledged primitive people of the time. The Sumerians, the Egyptians…the ruins of Bolivia clearly show machining and technology….there was interaction….
The Kasten book about Planet Serpo clearly states the aliens migrated to Zeta Reticula star system; it was not their native planet. And the army originally stated a flying saucer crashed at Roswell in 1947 and there were alien bodies….most dead and one maybe alive and they were moved to Wright Paterson AFB. Harry Truman created a new defense branch, a secret one, just to deal with these et problems. UFOs were clearly seen buzzing the US Capitol in 1952….by thousands! The real hoax is the coverup by the US government for reasons which are not clear. It might be the wish of the aliens….like anonymous donors….
It is extremely highly likely there is intelligent life in the universe besides what is on planet earth. Even if evolution is true (and evolution is just a local random phenomenon if at all) there was plenty of time even on this planet and other parts of the universe for intelligent life to evolve. Planet earth has supported living things over 3 billion years…..amazing how it all survived when one considers the 100 mile crater on Mars which probably wiped out its atmosphere long ago.
You scientists will never know; the power which sustains the Universe is not mechanical or deterministic; there are no machines or gears grinding; no engines pumping or burning; a vast ethereal presence instead…..probably God…whose form we confuse with our own….who has tried to guide us….to a compassionate forgiving and pleasurable way of life instead of the mundane and boring science which is a
huge disappointment….
Mr. Admin……you sound like Chairman Mao? Most scientists sound like communists or something…..there is Free Will and it is a fact of nature….and Quantum Mechanics and theories of Consciousness seem to indicate we are much more a part of reality and not mere observers…….Prayer hardwired us to God long before cellphones
and wireless technology……Hard to believe the quality of life has been much improoved when one considers 90% of americans are making less income than they did in 2010…hard facts? Your science and technology is not much public benefit unless you are a very rich man…and who is the richest man? Flat screen tv? When you look at the world have you ever seen it looking so flat? We see much better and farther and quite differently…..
…….so we continue to eat from The Tree of KNowledge and still die a mortal death…..you better hope there are some smarter aliens out there…..and hope they might have some pity on us…..all that science and technology has made most of us….poorer, yes?
not deceived by Satan

Caleb · July 14, 2014 at 22:24

Caleb · July 14, 2014 at 22:17

Yes, you are right. It is the home of the Greys, but there are more than one species of aliens and three live there. The Greys, Grays, and Zeta Reticulum. They are all extremely similar physically, but not mentally or spiritually. The common abductors are actually Zeta Reticulum mistaken as Greys. The Grays do not normally abduct, but the Greys do. The Greys will not return you, but Zeta Reticulum will. The Greys will normally do horrifying things to you while Zeta Reticulum will conduct small painless experiments and return you. In fact, the Greys envy our planet and want it. Fear the Greys. Luckily, we have the Pleiadeans and Procyonians to protect us.

Basic info. nothing more. What evidence suggests anything about life in this star system? Do you research or read much? Your use of movies as a reference is pretty sorry. Nothing personal, but I think you are a disinformation guru or a scientific mind trapped in your own universe of arrogance. Gravitywarpdrive.com is interesting and provides some salient info regarding space travel. The human race needs scientists that think about possibilities and look to the future as one of new discoveries where the human race becomes a space faring civilization. The secrecy surrounding our vast “black budget” programs will either lead us into an amazing hopeful future or doom us here on a planet in decline. The future of our survival will depend on people who dare search and learn what is out there and admit what it really means to the rest of us.

I write as the nuclear physicist who was first to publish about Marjorie Fish’s star map work, in SAGA Magazine in the early 1970s, and instigated the 1974 Astronomy Magazine article **The Zeta Reticuli Incident** by then editor Terence Dickinson, and co-authored the 318 page, 2007 book ,**Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience** with Kathleen Marden, Betty’s niece,There is a chapter on the star map. I would like to correct some of the false claims by commenters.
1. The aliens did not tell Betty or Barney where they were from. Zeta 1 and Zeta 2 Reticuli were deduced on the basis of more than 20 3D models built by Ms. Fish, as the base stars in the map drawn by Betty under post hypnotic suggestion from Dr. Ben Simon, one of the world’s top experts on PTSD. Her accuracy was attested to by Dr.Walter Mitchell, the long time Chairman of the Ohio State University Astronomy department, in my Movie **UFOs Are Real** which also has interviews with Marjorie, and Betty. 2.I spoke with Marjorie;s close relatives and she did not renounce the connection.3. Bob Lazar came forward much later, in 1989,, and made a number of false claims about his education and element 115 as I have noted in **Fraudulent Ufology**.I have not been able to find earlier comments about Reticulans before my article.4. Having worked on both fission and fusion propulsion systems, I would suggest the chapter **You Can Get Here from There** in my book *Flying Saucers and Science**.One would not accelerate half way and then decelerate any more than a 747 does. One gets to cruise velocty and then slows down when near the target. and makes use of cosmic freeloading. A fusion rocket can exhaust charged particles with 10 million times as much energy as in a chemical rocket. The Phoebus fission rocket engine built by Los Alamos was operated more than 40 years ago at a power level of 4400 megawatts though less than 8′ in diameter.Tecnological progress comes from doing things differently. The ISS circles the earth in 90 minutes. Magellan’s ship took 3 years.

It should also be noted that ZR1 and ZR2 are the closest to each other pair of sun-like stars in our neighborhood and that they and the other pattern stars are all in a plane like pepperoni on a pizza rather than like raisins in a loaf of raisin bread. It would appear that the ages of the stars are in questioon. Certainly even a mere 2 billion years should have been enough to get technology started.

I have had good fortune of seeing a space craft in a low valley and I was on a hill. Bright day light. I was close enough to see strucal detail. The vehicle is not built like an sturdy aircraft. They travel in a magnetic envelope and they also have the ability to disappear and reappear at a great distance instantly. This ship was friendly. It was approxamately 300 feet across. To the disbelievers, I did not have the ability or the inclination to saw off a 4 foot piece to show you.

    Tobias Claren · November 20, 2018 at 14:38

Why the certainty that Lazar lied about his education?
    Because the university says that?
Meanwhile, scientists, (retired, no more worried about their careers) have confirmed his profession. Or not?
For example, “Dr Krangal” (in Los Alamos in the 80’s).
Is it impossible, that intelligence agencies could wipe out any evidence of academic education from a university?

    @ All
By the way, we need an active search for extraterrestrial activity in our solar system and on Earth. “PSETI”.

    1. Sensor network.
Simple cheap G-sensors and magnetometers. Like in smartphones. For example, “Xloborg” for ~$11.50 plus Raspberry PI. The whole station for possibly 60 dollars.
Like weather stations, they could send live data to a server.
If these sensors detect variations due to exotic UFO drives, then UFOs could be detected in real time. And be displayed in real time on a world map at a website. Position and speed. Similar to “flightradar24” for aircraft.
But only UFOs could cause such fluctuations.
And if I’m not wrong, local fluctuations in gravity are ruled out in nature.
I could install such stations in two places.

    An app would be possible.
Also an automatic warning message if a UFO is above the user (GPS function of the smartphone) in the sky, would be possible.
Or a message when a UFO approaches the position. Calculated on the basis of flight direction and speed.
This increases the chance of many more witnesses. Eyewitnesses and cameras.

There is a guy from Austria, “Gerhardt Gröschel”, who has a “UFO detector”:

An open cheap system, Easy to build by anyone, with a central server, to monitor large areas would be much better.
A “UFO RADAR”. Not prone to aircraft.

    24/7 observation of the moon.
As many telescopes (with camera and tracking) as possible around the globe constantly monitor the moon and its orbit in real time.
You’ve probably heard of “moving points” that can be seen on video footage of the moon through a telescope.
Disadvantage: New moon may not show anything, half moon only half of it …
But amateur telescopes would be feasible for private individuals.
It only needs a single “point” whose movement does not conform to Newton’s laws of motion. Change of speed, change of direction etc.
Filmed in more than one telescope, a proof that it is not “video errors”, “drops of water”, “birds” etc.
Due to the different angles, possibly distance and size can be determined (?).
All telescopes use live motion detection, and send live video to a server, if movement is detected.

Both “crowdworking” projects where everyone can participate.

360° spherical high resolution video satellites in Earth orbit.
OK, satellites (the transport) are expensive. But small pico or nano satellites might be feasible for an NGO.

There are rumors that again and again flying objects were photographed from not public satellites. Even a photo with a visible shadow on the earth.

After the arrival of the not encrypted signals on earth, live broadcast to the Internet.
Any human on earth with internet could live watching UFOs in orbit of the earth.

    Underwater missions.
    Baikal Lake, Lake Erie etc…
We know the stories. Especially from Lake Baikal.
UFO sightings, deaths (diving disease) after panic fast ascent. Survivor reported about 2 to 3m tall beings with “diving helmets”.
And eye-catching big “rings” in the surface of lake Baikal on photos. As if a spaceship had melted through the ice.

Private moon missions (with SpaceX etc.). For example also by entertainment companies.
Media companies, entertainment companies (Discovery, Sony, Disney, National Geographic, Cameron, Spielberg, Trumbull etc.) could earn a lot of money through entertainment with moon mission(s).
Video transmissions from the moon, IMAX, licenses to news channels, pay-TV, movies, franchising, VR content, books etc..
90 minutes of blockbuster movies cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
Why no moon mission(s). This could take many billions.

First an unmanned photo-probe. Highest possible resolution, deepest possible orbit.
If “something” is found, the media industry is willing to spend a lot of money for further missions. Also with passengers.

Here we need people who have contact to the media industry. To producers etc. Bring the idea to these people.
To participate in manned missions, universities could pay for scientists.
People worldwide could donate money or participate in equities.

Entertainment companies would only be interested in sensations.
They are not interested in covering up such a thing.
We could trust them more than NASA. Do we believe, that NASA does not manipulate photos? Perhaps there ist nothing, but is that very likely?
We only experience it through private probes with photo cameras.
The DoD may prohibit the publication of such photos. See the NASA Founding Law.
And the DoD would ban it. That is obvious. “Endangerment of National Security”.
What would happen, if it became known that there may be alien artifacts on the moon? A race to the moon to recover valuable technology?

Do not the well-known “Believers” have any interest?
Hillary Clinton said that as President, Area 51 would be investigated.

Trumbull, Rockefeller, Friedman, Hillary and Bill Clinton, Nick Pope, Giorgio A. Tsoukalos, MUFON etc..

Whilst I am non committed either way regards to intelligent alien life, I do find one scientific aspect of the possibility intriguing. Why does the scientific community insist that intelligent to survive it MUST live on a planet within the “Goldilock” zone? How many times have scientists been wrong on where life can surivive?, it has only been recently that where life exists on earth had to be increased as we had been told no life could exist in these areas and now they introduce the “extremophiles”. Why limit the possibilities?…… just a thought

The US government has the human race inslaved and in denial, and they are terrifyed that once disclosure happens they will lose all power and the US will be land of the free the way it is suspoes to be. Also science and history is all a sham. Our eyes will be opened soon and we will no longer be slaves, in this dimention or any of the others. We are all in a state of sleep and unknowing whats really going on. Give me proof i am wrong.

      john gage · September 19, 2015 at 08:38

I think it’s you who needs to prove that Zeta Reticuli is NOT inhabited by aliens. Do you have any proof whatsoever? Any pictures or videos, showing that it is not inhabited? If you don’t have proof, YOUR “scientific proof” is just as insignificant as those who believe that the grey’s come from this star system. I always find it funny how we are supposed to just accept your opinion as “proof”, when you have none, but all those who say that aliens MAY BE from this star system are “nuts”. Such an arrogant, shallow argument on the part of the scientific skeptic. Again, provide proof, or your argument is just the same as the believers……

Is the drawing of the alien near the start not just a tracing of a still from the movie Strange Invaders (1983)?

Dear Admin,

would the James WEBB Telescope will show the truth behind the Zeta 2 Reticuli system ? as they are advertising this Telescope to be launched on 2018, please comment on this ??

Many thanks,
Asif Ali

    admin · January 31, 2014 at 10:59

Dear Asif, as launched the Webb Telescope is not optimised for observing planets around other stars, being intended for infrared astronomy and deep-space cosmology work, but it could be modified to do so.If we knew for sure that there are planets in the Zeta 2 Reticuli system, the Webb Telescope might be able to resolve them if it was upgraded with a ‘starshade‘ . According to this Space.com piece it could then resolve planets 10-20 parsecs, that is 32-65 light years, away. Observation would be limited to determining some atmospheric constituents, including biomarkers like oxygen and methane, and some information on the surface features.

    I hope this helps you.

John Gage · January 22, 2014 at 08:48

Good article, and very informative, BUT until you can offer proof beyond a reasonable doubt (such as pictures or video) of this system, close up, and you can ultimatley prove that it’s not inhabited by the “grey’s”, I will continue to lean towards believing the Betty & Barney Hill testimony. Their story offers more proof that the “grey’s” come from this system, and that this system is in fact, inhabited. Again, if you can prove to me that this system is uninhabited, I’ll buy your opinion. Think outside of the box a bit and open up your mind. Don’t just believe what others tell you is “true”. Most of the “truth” taught by mainstream education, is in fact, just theory at best.

    John Baker · April 11, 2014 at 23:18

There is as yet no evidence that there are even any worlds in the Zeta Reticuli system to be inhabited, much less that there are inhabited worlds. That is a simple fact, not “just theory at best.”

You are, of course, free to believe whatever you like, despite the lack of anything remotely resembling evidence to support it, but don’t be surprised when few take you seriously.

      Warren Peace · June 5, 2015 at 00:36

John, do you mean the study of exoplanets by observing a star, and measuring the period of the change in light intensity which results from orbiting planets passing in front of the star (and a spectrographic analysis shows which elements are likely present) can now determine if these said exoplanets are inhabited? Curious – I didn’t think even the James Webb space telescope (which hasn’t launched yet) can do that.

William · January 2, 2014 at 01:03

Nice and interesting articel.

Yeah sience. From a rational AND spiritual point of view with the background of own experience(whats more worthy than everything else, cause even when no one’s believing you or you can’t prove it(at this point of science), no one can ever take that away from you)

So we can’t use our earth as a standart for life when we look for example to the zeta system. Even when those suns much younger is than ours, on our planet, it take a long time to this point, even with an astroid crashing on earth killing everything on the surface.
Lets imagine some of these dinosaurs, some raptors were hiding in caves, not much, maybe 100 or more. Lets say some other species did the same.

They could live end evolved until today without any human ever knowing it.(what would be wrong, cause many ancient cultures speak of reptilian “gods”.

So these evolved reptilians would have been survived til now.

On another planet, evolution could have been faster, much faster.
Lets say we were really slow.

Under these aspects intelligent life could be there and even older than humans.
These species could have and still visiting us here on earth.

Why is government makin a secret out of it and hunting them down maybe?
If the aliens really go public, maybe the zetas, thar could crash in the power system of goverments and world economy. Both would crash and burn, what would be actually a good thing.

We could learn from them to become a civilised and intelligent species, learn to live without money, without destroying our own planet and stop these insane suicide commando call economic grow.
I describe the human race now still as a high primitive lifeform and not intelligent.

Intelligent species such as delphines would be likely more interessting for aliens than the human race. We are interesting because we think that we are more than we are and stupid enough to damage our lifespace to, thats the insane thing, increase life comfort.

By the way on youtube you can find a speech of the canadian ex defense minister talking about 4 known alien species on earth.

I thought it was Zeta Reticuli, but I was mistaken.
Elizabeth Klarer reported that her trip to the planet “Meton”, one of the planets circum-navigating Proxima Centauri, took a mere hour and forty minutes. From what has emerged out of Area 51, Dr. Stephen Greer’s “Disclosure”s, and sundry other “derided-by-the-estabolishment” [sic, but stet] sources, the alien ability to bend space-time would appear to be possible, even if not real in the beliefs of scientism.

The short answer is I just don’t know. You can read a little more in the post 50 Years of SETI: where are the aliens?

Nice article admin, it was very informative. Now about SETI; doesn’t it just detect radio waves? What if the ETs don’t use radio waves for communication? Maybe that’s why we haven’t heard anything in 50 years?

        admin · January 28, 2015 at 10:32

Hi, yes that is a good point. Perhaps there are thousands of civilisations out there chatting away on tachyon phones, and as soon as we invent the tachyon phone we’ll be able to join in!

SETI theorists assume that extraterrestrial civilisations trying to reach out to less advanced folk like us will use “dumbed down” technology like radio to get our attention.

          SN · February 1, 2015 at 07:47

Those SETI scientists need to come up with another theory because it’s been 50 years and nada… Well There was one occasion when they picked up something but they never heard it again. I think a better way of trying to communicate in a universe so big is by using light… If only we could generate some type of light that can travel light years away… And if there are any real smart ETs out there, they will track the source.

Thanks for a rational article about a very interesting star system. I can’t help but wonder that if we were in such a system would it be possible to actually explore the neighboring star system. admin · August 6, 2013 at 08:30

Thanks for your kind words, I enjoyed writing this. Just to follow up your comment, the two stars are still a huge distance apart. In terms, they are separated by 3750 AU, note that in nearly 40 years Voyager 1 has traveled about 125 AU! Even with astonishingly advanced technology (fusion rockets? anti-matter rockets?) journeying between the stars in the Zeta Reticuli system would be a big deal. Say there was a spacecraft capable of accelerating at 1g continuously that leaves one of the stars with its engine running all the time (unbelievably unrealistic), then half way there flips over and decelerates until it stops at the other star. It will still take about 55 days for the trip!

Hi Colin,

A very good article, and I completely agree with you about the fictionality of the Little Grey Men.

But if the stars in the Zeta Reticuli system are almost identical in spectrum and mass to the Sun, they would be in the same position on the Main Sequence on the H-R Diagram, so how could they be only half the age of our Sun? I could accept a smallish difference in age – maybe 20% younger; but how could they be only half the age of the Sun?

    admin · May 10, 2013 at 14:58

Dear Terry, thanks for your kind words. To be honest there is more I could have said about this system, these stars are actually slightly anomalous, in that they are not exactly placed on the HR-diagram where you would expect. They must be young as they are comparatively deficient in “metals” and their ages are estimated from observations of the Ca ii line in their spectra which suggests they have been on the Main Sequence two billion years or less. However their luminosities are less than you’d expect for stars of this age. See this paper.

Just going back to your question, if you could look at our Sun two billion years ago, wouldn’t it be more or less in the same location on the HR diagram as it is now? As far as I know back then the Sun’s surface temperature was slightly less than it is today but its luminousity was roughly 85% what it is today (I wasn’t about then so I’m using data from here). To me that suggests the Sun back then would lie a bit lower on the main sequence than it does now, but I would have thought it would still be a G2.

Adding to the confusion, their proper motion suggests they belong to the Zeta Herculis Moving Group, a set of nine or so star systems moving with the same velocity, and the ages of stars in this group are estimated to be 6-8 billion years (I assume this is where the older ages sometimes quoted come from). So there are some mysteries about Zeta Reticuli, but they’re a bit trickier than whether or not there are little grey men living there!

      Rebekah · April 21, 2016 at 15:19

There is one problem with your article. You suggested that since that group of stars is so much younger than ours it would be unlikely to have higher forms of life than what ours would have. Writing a paragraph to make that point seems a little doubting to me. There is a gap. If there is higher beings there, who is to say that it is where they originated. They very well could have developed on an entirely different system and traveled. Being of such a high intelligence, one should only assume they would branch out. Further more, in leaving their origanal ” home ” for what could be a number of reasons, it would be assumed that they would seek out a young system to inhabit. This way they could stay in one place for much longer. On another note, I found most of your article to be very interesting and insightful.

        admin · April 22, 2016 at 10:35

Dear Rebekah, thank you for your comment. You have made a good point and I will adjust the wording in the article to reflect it.

I loved the article. Curious, in the Hill incident, I saw the movie as a child. Did they possibly draw the ‘star map’ at all, and where did the idea that it was a ‘new’ constellation come from? Just made up for the movie?
I have always believed in aliens, the universe is too vast. There’s life throughout all the galaxies. And life lost, with magnatar star quakes and black holes and pulsars, etc.

Oh fiddlesticks Colin! Why did you have to rain on our American parade by making fun of Project Serpo and the Hill incident! Have you not seen “close encounters of the third kind?” I bet you don’t believe in the aliens at area 51 either.

Kidding aside, great article. I live in Florida, U.S.A. Can I see these stars? I am surprised that the Kepler telescope was never used on these stars. Seems like they would check the closest stars first. I guess now its too late since Keplers gears are apparently no longer working correctly.

      admin · August 30, 2013 at 09:26

I don’t think Reticulum can be seen from Florida, it’s visible at latitudes between +23° and -90° I think your location is too far north.

      David Majors · September 3, 2013 at 03:01

Kepler never could see these stars. It was designed to point and monitor the same patch of sky continuously in Cygnus. Unlike the gravitational perturbation methodology it detects them directly when they pass across the face of their sun.
The advantage of always pointing in the same direction is that you catch the rarer events and verify the planets’ existence through multiple transit detections.

    David Majors · September 3, 2013 at 04:03

While both stars are fairly close analogs of the Sun they are not the same.
A G2 V star of solar mass will only occupy the same position as the Sun in the H-R diagram if the chemical makeup is similar. Zet Ret is deficient in metals – everything except hydrogen and helium – relative to the Sun. All other things being equal lower metallicity = lower luminosity-hence the position of Zet Ret “below ” the Sun on the H-R diagram
The low metallicity of Zet Ret also implies that they are older than the 2 billion years indicated in Ca II chromospheric studies . The space velocity of these stars implies membership in the Zet Her moving group which moves appreciably above the galaxy’s disk-also consistent with older stellar age.
I know this site is not about stellar evolution but there are a couple of questions here in the comments section that this may help answer.

At any rate ,they are here to negotiate our terms for surrender .

Denying the existence of extra-terrestrials is illogical, given the large amount of corroborated evidence. (Please, don’t waste your time debunking – I have never met a debunker that has had a worthwhile argument, or any evidence, and they are clearly the LEAST informed among us).

As a scientist, empirical data is the golden ticket, and granted, due to the covert government’s efforts, they have been able to convince many of you that ET’s are somehow unworthy of serious study. Only close-minded non-scientists, or disinfo agents, should have such an untenable position. When you spend the time, as I have, to do the research, and consider the weight of the statistical evidence (and of course, it doesn’t hurt that my father worked on Apollo and I’ve spoken with astronauts, who tell a different story in private) AND I have seen a real ET vehicle – witnessed, no less, then I can CONFIDENTLY claim that ET’s are here, they are not grey – their ‘clothing’ is, and the US is definitely covering up the greatest secret in history, which should be an affront to every American who funds their damn black ops!

      Antron Argaiv · July 7, 2015 at 23:17

Warren gives tantalizing hints that he knows more than we do, but doesn’t reveal all he knows. He claims to have seen a real ET craft, but tells us no more. Then he tells us of the great coverup, but again, refuses to provide details. Is this because he is “spinning a yarn” and hesitates to provide any details that might not be verifiable? One would think that this is his opportunity to let the rest of us in on the big secret, and blow the coverup wide open. Or, at least, he could tell us the shape of the ET craft and its approximate dimensions.

No, Warren choses to keep his knowledge to himself. At least he doesn’t encourage us to “study it out!” Maybe some day, he’ll tell what he knows, but for now, he chooses to remain silent…except for a few tantalizing hints that he knows more than we mere mortals do.

I want to hear all your stories!

Sorry War, I have to agree with AA here. “Where’s the fact(s) JACK??” While we’ve all heard stories of astronauts knowing more than they tell (ostensibly having taken the same ‘oath’ we here from the military, telescope operators, et.al.) cough up what you’ve heard – give us a chance to verify/debunk to our deepest pleasures. Merely spitting out ‘yarns’, for that’s all they are without citations, we can only draw the same conclusions as AA. Agreed, too many motes of dust floating out ‘here’ to conclude only ours is ‘special’. But what’s our place in the never-ending-march-of-motes? Thanks for any additional info you provide.

Yes its true that denying the ET existence is very illogical.
It all started last year when i experienced some weird things happen to me.
I have watch some videos in the net such as expose and revelations most of them were hoax, but some of them i believe its very true..

Why do the government cover up all of it? Simply because it will destroy the balance and it will bring CHAOS. Imagine people will be confused specially with there beliefs, people might feel that they were fooled since the day that they are all aware in there surroundings.

Hoping that the day will come that all of it will be declassified or some person will show clear evidences.. This may lead first to “CHAOS” but it will bring “UNITY” for all human races.

    The Grey are REAL!

(Edited to remove rudeness, please do not insult people because you disagree with them. Prove them wrong with evidence if it exists. ADMIN)

Why do so many people question the existence of little grey men? Does one not stop to think, if a plant system such as Zet Ret, having a sun with less luminosity than ours, they wouldn’t have the same coloring as us (similar to the differences between colors of skin of people from Africa vs Sweden or Norway?) Also, if their planet is not as bright as our sun, this might account for their larger eyes, they might need to be larger to allow in more light.
Similarly, it would be possible for being from planets that have less gravity to be tall and thin, planets with more gravity to be short and stout, etc. I think most humans limit their thoughts by expecting everything to be similar to themselves.

It would be interesting to know what people 20,000 years ago first thought of creatures in the sea. I imagine they saw water, went in for a bath or a swim, and occasionally saw things, and for years it was rumored that aliens lived in the waters. One day it was proven correct, these aliens that are now known as fish and sharks and all others types of marine life.

We need to educate people to open their minds to possibilities first, because until we do, no matter what proof we have of any extraterrestrial life, most governments on planet Earth are going to either cover it up or deny its existence., be it from Zet Ret or any other star system out there.

“fictionality of the Little Grey Men”
Too bad the Gov’t has you fooled

Hi! I would just like to inform you all, that Betty and Barney Hill was NOT the first who mentioned the Zeta Reticuli “Small Gray” German soldiers in ” Black Forrest Case Case” in 1936 did the same. Check documents online and find out for yourself.

Also In the 1893 article “Man of the Year Million”, the well-known author H.G. Wells had envisioned the possibility of humanity transformed into a race of grey-skinned beings; who were perhaps 1 meter tall, with big heads and large, oval-shaped pitch black eyes.

Dont assume that mainstream medias LIES always is the truth.
